FAQ

Clear answers for parents

This is the straightforward version: safety, privacy, plans, and how Klio works as a calmer alternative to general AI tools for children.

Safety

What makes Klio safer than a general AI tool for my child?

Klio is designed from scratch for children aged 8–14 — tone, vocabulary, and topic boundaries are calibrated for this age group, not for adults. A separate safety AI checks every message your child sends and every reply before it appears. You as a parent get visibility over activity: topics discussed, time spent, safety alerts — something general AI tools do not offer for child accounts.

What happens if my child asks something inappropriate or concerning?

Depends on severity. For mild off-topic questions (crushes, minor rule-breaking curiosity), Klio redirects gently without alarming the child or alerting you. For serious signals — self-harm, bullying, abuse, dangerous situations — Klio responds with age-appropriate support, shares resources like Telefonul Copilului 116 111, and sends you a priority alert immediately. We don't wait for the weekly report.

Can my child see explicit, violent, or scary content through Klio?

No. Klio refuses to generate violence, sexual content, self-harm instructions, or anything rated above age-appropriate. Filters run on both sides of the conversation — input and output — so even if your child tries to jailbreak (kids do try), the answer stays safe.

Does Klio do my child's homework for them?

No, by design. Klio uses the Socratic method — asks questions, offers hints, explains concepts, but doesn't write the essay or solve the problem outright. If your child asks "write me a paragraph about the French Revolution", Klio will ask what they already know, what specifically they need to say, and help them build the answer themselves.

Privacy

Who can see my child's conversations?

Your child, and Klio's automated systems. You as a parent do NOT see message content — instead you see activity summaries (topics, usage time, alerts). This is intentional: children need privacy to ask curious or embarrassing questions without feeling watched, and parents need assurance without becoming surveillants. If a safety alert triggers, you get context about what happened without full transcripts.

Where is my data stored?

In the European Union. Infrastructure runs on EU servers, compliant with GDPR and Romanian ANSPDCP regulations. We don't transfer child data outside the EU.

Are conversations used to train AI models?

No. Your child's conversations are not used to train Klio or any external AI model. The AI providers we use have contractual agreements that prohibit training models on children's conversations.

How do I delete my child's data?

From the parent dashboard: Settings → Child profile → Delete account. This removes all conversations, profile data, and account information within 30 days. You can also export everything first if you want a copy.

What information do you collect about my child?

Only what's strictly needed: first name (or nickname), birth year (for age calibration), and conversation history. No last name, no address, no phone, no photos, no school info unless you add it voluntarily. Kids don't create their own accounts — parents do.

How it works

How do I set up Klio for my child?

Three steps, about 5 minutes total. Create your parent account, add a child profile (name, birth year, PIN), hand over the device. Your child logs in with the PIN and starts chatting. You get the first weekly report after 7 days.

Can multiple children use one account?

Yes. The Family plan supports 2 profiles, Family+ supports 3. Each child has their own profile, their own conversation history, their own PIN. Siblings don't see each other's chats.

Does Klio work on phone, tablet, computer?

Yes, all three. Klio runs in the browser, so any modern device works — iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Chromebook. No app to install. We're considering a native app for late 2026.

What languages does Klio speak?

Romanian and English, equally well. Your child can switch mid-conversation — ask in Romanian, get a clarification in English, switch back. Perfect for bilingual families and international schools.

What ages is Klio built for?

Klio is built for children aged 8–14. The tone, safety boundaries, and learning style are calibrated for this stage: clear enough for younger children, useful enough for homework and more complex conversations.

Pricing

Is there a free version?

Yes. 50 messages per month, 1 child profile, basic parent dashboard. Enough to test if Klio fits your family before committing. No credit card required.

What's the difference between Family and Family+?

Family (RON 39.99/month) covers 2 children, 500 messages, weekly reports. Family+ (RON 59.99/month) adds a third profile, more messages (1000), advanced AI for complex homework, and priority safety alerts. If your child mostly asks short questions, Family is enough. If they write essays or tackle demanding subjects, Family+ pays for itself.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancel from the dashboard — no phone call, no retention script. Subscription stays active until the end of your billing period, then stops. No refunds for partial months, but see our refund policy for exceptions in the first 14 days.

Do you have a discount for more children or extended family plan?

Family plans already cover multiple children. For households with 4+ kids or extended families, email us at hello@klio.chat for custom pricing.

Schools

Does Klio work for schools?

Yes. We're preparing a dedicated offering for private schools and international programs, with per-classroom licensing, a teacher dashboard, and DPA included. Official launch is planned for autumn 2026.

Can we pilot Klio before the official launch?

Yes, we're accepting a limited number of schools into the pilot program. 60 days free for your first class, no commitment. Email scoli@klio.chat with your school name, approximate student count, and the grade you'd like to pilot.

How is the school version different from the family version?

Three main differences. Teachers get aggregate insights at the class level (common topics, questions students struggle with) without seeing individual student messages. Assignment mode lets teachers align Klio discussions with the curriculum. Billing is consolidated — one invoice per school, instead of 200 individual family subscriptions.

Does Klio know the Romanian curriculum?

Yes. Klio is familiar with the Romanian national curriculum (grades I–VIII) and international programs commonly taught in private schools — Cambridge IGCSE, IB MYP, and English National Curriculum. Teachers can align discussions to any of these.
